The year 2007 ended with the release of a device that is in the process of changing the way we view our communication abilities. Recently I have been promoting some iPhone download services for the many new iPhone users out there. These services offer unlimited downloads for a one time fee. I have received some great feedback regarding the users of these services. However, as with any new technology there are those whom (myself included) need a little extra time to wrap they're mind around what they are using.

I received an email from a customer who purchased one of these download services asking me if I could help him. It seems that he subscribed to the service but was unable to download any software or music to his new iPhone. After a brief email exchange I asked him if he was actually trying to download from his iPhone or from an external PC. As you might guess he was trying to transfer files from his PC to his iPhone using the download service. I explained that he doesn't need to use a PC to get software on his iPhone instead, he can simply browse to the download service with his iPhone and start downloading away.Once this was understood everything was working perfectly!

So your asking what's the point here? The point is with it being 2008 we still are living by a cabled mentality with regards to our communication abilities. Many of us still have landlines in our homes, and most of us grew up with at least one land-line in our home regardless if we had cellphones as well. This will not be the case for the current and upcoming generation. Devices like the iPhone make it possible for us to do whatever we need to do online without wires. Even with Cell phones having Internet capability for full functionality in the past we simply piggybacked our laptops on top of our cellphone Internet connection. With mobile devices like the IPhone we no longer need to do so. In fact, we don't need any special cables or wires to do so either. By simply opening up the integrated browser on the IPhone we are granted the freedom to browse, download and exchange data without wires!

It stands to reason then that even though we have all these high tech wireless devices coming out on the market that will end the need for us to even have a computer hooked to a telephone line once and for all it will be some time until we can as a society shake from our brains that we actually need wires to communicate. That a mobile device no longer has to be connected to a PC for some of it's functionality. Blue-tooth is an amazing protocol that has helped to revolutionize the way our gadgets interact. A very good example of what I'm talking about just happened recently:

I was in the process of making a video presentation on my laptop when my microphone headset went out. This is a legacy headset that has a 1/8th microphone jack that simply plugs into the audio input on my laptop. I was frantic as I had this video to make and no sound input. I tried for an hour to fix the microphone by rewiring with no luck. Then after about 2 hours it hit me that I could use my blue-tooth headset as a audio input on my laptop thanks to it's integrated blue-tooth capability. Now some of you might be going "well duH!" but for me since I haven't used my blue-tooth devices for my laptop before and only for my cellphone this was something new. But it's a good example of how ingrained the "wired" concept is in our heads. I wasn't thinking at the time how I could maybe go out and pick up the latest and greatest wireless microphone. Instead I was thinking about where I could go to get an old legacy microphone that was exactly like the one I had!

So the moral to this story is to start thinking outside the box and how we can further detach ourselves from the wired networks. The more detached we are, the more mobile we are and, the more mobile we are the more free we are! To you and your new year!

What Is A Tier 1 Bandwidth Backbone Provider?

One could say that the phrases "Tier I" and "backbone provider" are a bit redundant; others might say that they comfortably go together (like "ice cold Coke"). the functional contrast should be between a Tier I provider (e.g. AT&T, MCI, Sprint, Savvis/C&W, Global Crossing, Qwest, Level 3) and companies that are not Tier I providers -- who themselves have to buy bandwidth from Tier I providers.

Best example would be a local Internet provider offering T1 or DS3 service in a regional area: they might have their own facilities interconnecting different serving offices in a region, but they would have to send the traffic to a Tier I provider if the traffic goes outside their region. The Tier II provider makes money by buying a fixed amount of bandwidth, and selling it to many subscribers. The company must decide on what level of contention their customers must be exposed to. If you take a look at the W(wireless) ISP forum in BBR Reports you will see several threads from time to time discussing something like "how many customers will fit on a T1." Different providers will have different philosophies about how much to oversubscribe their network. What is true in the WISP world is also true in the cable internet world, and is also in the Tier II world. Think of it this way: if a local Tier II provider like "X-Com" (made up name) sells a T1 service to a new customer, will they add incrementally to their wholesale bandwidth purchase? No. But if Sprint sells a T1, their customer will get a dedicated port onto Sprint's backbone network at full speed with no contention.

Generally, there will be a price advantage of using a Tier II provider compared to a Tier I provider, as Tier II providers undercut the Tier I pricing and can afford to do so as they are oversubscribing their network facilities.

Tier II providers can be excellent source of inexpensive bandwidth if your network needs can absorb occasional delays or added latency (I'm not talking outages) -- if it's not mission critical or real time stuff, or if you're not yourself reselling the bandwidth.

Bottom line is don't shop just on price. There's more to making a good business decision than dollars and cents. You need to make sure you get exactly what you need no matter what the cost.

Cranking the Volume on Your iPod or MP3 Player Can Damage Hearing

Kids have always loved listening to their favorite music, and the louder the better ?much to their parents?dismay. In the 1980s, the portable tape recorder with headphones ?which came to be known as the Walkman??enabled teenagers to listen to their music as loud as they wanted, anywhere they wanted, without disturbing anyone around them.

But the more modern rendition of the Walkman ?portable MP3 Players and iPods ?pose a major threat to our childrens hearing health, and to ours.

The problem is a combination of the technology of portable digital devices that creates a non-buffered crystal clear sound, and the type of headphones typically used with them, which do not have a buffer either. In December 2005, Dean Garstecki, an audiologist and professor at Northwestern University reported that more and more young people were being diagnosed with the types of hearing loss typically found in older adults. He attributed this trend to the earbud?type headphones that usually accompany iPod and MP3 Players. With the earbud headphones, the sound frequencies are not buffered as they are with the more traditional, ear cup-style headsets.

Newsweek Magazine recently reported that researchers at the House Ear Institute found that listeners can unfortunately increase the volume of todays portable digital devices without the signal distortion that occurs with traditional analog audio.?The older-model headphones that were popular just 15 to 20 years ago ?that have ear cups outside of the ears ?had that distortion when the volume was turned up, which functioned as a much-needed buffer to protect our hearing.
